Mismas in the Triestin Dialect means: a mixture, confusion.  It comes from the German term Misch-masch.

Over 10 weeks, countless written contributions were made, in and out of the classroom, constructive criticism given and received and comfort zones challenged.

This magazine is the collective proof of a community-wide project that was met with enthusiasm, willingness and patience by so many who hoped to make something truly unique. And that we did.

What is MIS-MAS?

MIS-MAS is a free literary magazine in English curated by and with the written contributions of adult and teenage English language students at the Associazione Italo Americana del FVG as well as submissions from the general public.
Content includes fiction and non-fiction, opinion pieces, essays, short stories, and poetry highlighting the lives and experiences of Trieste's residents.
The project was inspired by the literary magazines published at the high school of Erin Russo, an Associazione Italo Americana FVG Teacher, who thought it would be a compelling project for adult classes to complete over the 10 week spring semester.
Students participated in a wide variety of in-class creative and prose writing lessons and were expected to write pieces for homework.
The response to the Mis Mas challenge by students was overwhelming and it should be acknowledged that the published pieces represent only half of the content that was generated.
The name for the magazine came from student, Giada Cadei, during a brainstorm session. It is a Triestine word that means mix-match or hodge-podge - what we thought was an appropriate name for a lit mag housing many writing styles.
The cover art was done by another adult student, Andrea Zorzetti, whose hobby is watercolor painting. It represents a group of students outside of the Associazione Italo Americana FVG's door after class chatting in the sunset glow of Piazza Sant'Antonio, a familiar scene for the adult evening class.
It is our hope that Mis Mas will continue to be a successful spring project for all ages and levels of English language students at our association.  We believe it is a powerful way to demonstrate to ourselves and community all that we have learned and shared with our students and peers.
The project was also made possible thanks to the American Corner Trieste and the US Embassy to Italy.
