STEAM DIARY WEEK ONE DAY 4 TOURISM

STEAM DIARY WEEK ONE DAY 4 TOURISM

 We kicked  off the day by meeting our new teacher Jason.  He tested everyone's memory with a quick warm up game and the "story of his life".

We then broke up into groups and focused on today's topic of tourism.  After the free reading, the larger group worked together to compose a list of useful words and phrases related to travel and tourism, as well as a bit of role playing.  The smaller group planned an around the world "cruise" and played a grammar game.

Then it was time for some homemade soft served banana ice cream which Janine magically orchestrated.

After our snack, we broke up into four groups and began to put together our Traveler's Bookmark. Each group assembled a list of 10 useful phrases that could be used while in a hotel, restaurant, airport or traveling.

That left us with just a few minutes to practice our juggling skills.

STEAM DIARY WEEK ONE DAY 3: CODING MINE CRAFT

Today we decided to make our dreams come true.

We spent time painting ourselves achieving our goals using watercolors. For High School, this meant painting ourselves accomplishing our individual goals. For Middle School, we decided to learn how to juggle three balls by Friday so we painted that. We learned that it is important to have clear goals and to be able to break them down into manageable blocks, practice a lot and go on to the next block and, ultimately, learn how to do what we set out to learn. We imagined ourselves as WINNERS, even before mastering our new skill.

As a group we decided to participate in the HOUR OF CODE.

Specifically, with tablets and computers, we became Coders. We chose to work on our favorite game, MINECRAFT!

STEAM DIARY WEEK ONE DAY 2: GETTING READY FOR NEW SKILL FRIDAY

The High School group launched a new challenge to our class but also to the larger public. Can you learn a new skill relatively well by Friday?

We found out from this video that you can get pretty good at just about everything if you put in 20 hours of deliberate and careful practice.

Here is what we want to do by Friday.

Anastasia: Learn the basic judo falls.

Aldo: Do an elevator speech in Spanish (NB: Aldo is a native English speaker, hence the language challenge).

Lara: Get to stage 1 of solving the Rubik's cube.

We will update you tomorrow on how that goes!

Other highlights from today:

1. High School continued Fluency practice by reading the first few pages of 1985 by George Orwell out loud while Middle Schoolers continued their Chapter a day practice reading out loud of Judy Moody.

2. The role of the day was at a restaurant. We got practice using our daily English in common situations so we can help our parents on vacation. ;)

3. In the kitchen we conducted an experiment to see which would make better compote: yesterday's fruit salad, or peaches and nectarines from today. The winner was a tie. Both tasted amazing!

Have a great day and we will be back tomorrow!

STEAM DIARY WEEK ONE DAY 1: FRUIT SALAD & FRIENDS

Middle and High School STEAM got off to an EXCELLENT start!
We were at the airport today, using our English in a practical situation by brainstorming airport vocabulary and performing airport roleplays and inventing our own! Then we watched this very funny video  produced by Virgin Airlines. It was a crowd pleaser!

We split up at that point and did our favorite fluency exercise, reading out loud! When we were finished with that, it was time to go in the kitchen!

It was the FRUIT SALAD CHALLENGE. Group Orange and Group White went head to head to make the BEST FRUIT SALAD EVER! Thanks to Joe and Denise, our fantastic judges.

It was a great day! Here were our favorite moments.

Janine= Making fruit salad
Alessia = Airport role play
Samuele= Making and eating fruit salad
Daniele= Making fruit salad
Michele= Fruit salad because it was fun
Lara= Watching the Virgin Airlines inflight video
Anastasia= Airport role play because it was interesting
I.= Inflight video because it was fun
Giovanni= Airport role play

MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE. Documentary and WebChat with the U.S. Department of State - Washington D.C. for LGBT Month.

The Progress of Price:  Using policy, advocacy and storytelling to advance LGBTI rights.
Live conference with:
 Randy Berry, U.S. Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons,
Judy Shepard – Matt’s mother, Michele Josue – Film Maker.  Moderated by Karoline Steckley.

Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine is a film that tells the story of the 1998 murder of college student Matthew Shepard and how it sparked a national dialogue on gay rights in the United States. Since that time, legal protections of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people have been put into place not only in America, but around the world.

“Promoting the human rights of all persons, everywhere, including LGBTI persons” is a U.S. foreign policy priority, but also “the right thing to do,” says U.S. Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons Randy Berry.

Thirty-six countries prohibit hate crimes based on sexual orientation. But in many other countries, people can be jailed or even killed because of their sexual orientation or activity. Clearly, there is still work to be done to protect the basic human rights of LGBTI people.

Join Berry on Tuesday, June 14,  to discuss ways to promote tolerance and develop policies to stop hate crimes.

Judy Shepard — Matthew’s mother and founding president of the Matthew Shepard Foundation — Friend of Mine filmmaker Michele Josue and moderator Mark Bromley, of the Council for Global Equality will join Berry.
