AIA FVG / American Corner Trieste - October 2015 Newsletter

OCTOBER - Fall is Here!  Time for Membership Renewal, Conferences, Sci Fi, Halloween, Reading, Moms & Daughters.  We’re off to a great start!  Welcome!  It is nice to see so many new faces.  Haven’t been in yet?  Lots of great reasons to come and join an activity, renew your membership, take a course. 
OFFICE:
OFFICE HOURS  
Our Hours are:  Mornings:  Tuesday and Thursday 9–12,   Afternoons:  Monday to Friday 4-7.  Closed Oct. 31- Nov 3.  During Office Hours, you can renew your Membership or Course with Cash, Pick up your receipts for IBAN Payments, Check Out Books, DVD’s Magazines.  Our Front Desk Volunteers have been working hard to automate our accounting and registration procedures!

9 great films at Cinema dei Fabbri.  The series begins on Nov. 5th with GONE GIRL. Followed by WHILE WE’RE YOUNG on Nov 19th.   

Renew your Membership Early!  We encourage you to purchase your Memberships for 2015/16 during our Office Hours before the Film Series begins.  Here is the Membership Form.  You can pay cash or pay via IBAN.  Remember to fill in and scan your Membership Form along with the copy of your IBAN Payment.  Prices remain unchanged:  €35 for the Regular Adult Membership and €25 for Reduced Membership - Students age 16 and over, Teachers and over age 65.  To attend courses, the student (or a parent) must be a member).  Membership is valid for checking out books, magazines, DVD’s and for 9 films in the 2015/16 American Cinema Series in the Original Version at Cinema dei Fabbri and plus reduced ticket prices on other films at Fabbri.  Membership is valid one school year and must be renewed annually in September.

AIA FVG ENGLISH COURSES
Our Fall Courses got off to a great start!  Welcome to all of our new students young and older!  Take advantage of the American Library and Facilities.  If you missed the beginning of courses for ADULTS or KIDS, contact us.  We’ll try to find a space for you or an alternative day based on availability. We calculate the price from the date you start. 
WEEKEND WARRIOR FULL IMMERSION ENGLISH for ADULTS.   – The monthly dates have been set for the year - 1 weekend each month.  The next session is October 24-25.  2-7 on Saturday and Sunday.  10 hours of intensive English over the weekend. Objective: English Fluency!  Too busy during the week?  This is for you.  Start communicating in English, fast!
TOEFL and SAT EXAM PREPARATION – Contact us if you will be taking the exams to go to the university in the US.  We have set up a class to help you.

I LOVE READING – Summer Reading Contest  If you or your child participated in the Summer Reading Contest, you can still pick up your certificate at the Front Desk, during Office Hours.   
ROMUN2015 Workshop for the American Corner Delegation – Oct. 3, 2 pm
9 High School and University students from Trieste are attending the Model UN Simulation in Rome thanks to scholarships offered by the U.S. Embassy to Italy.  Workshop in collaboration with M.S.O.I. Gorizia.
FAMILY FILM NIGHT - FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC at American Corner Trieste
Every month we will have a cartoon family film in English.  Bring the kids, the grandchildren.  Take a break! Bring some friends. Cartoon Feature Films in English for all ages. Here is the list for 2015/16.  This month:

Make, Create, Hang out in English.  Open to all Middle and High School Students.  Every week a different activity.  Cooking, Playing, Coding in English.  This month we’re working on the Children’s Halloween Party and organizing a party of our own!

MOM & BABY SURVIVAL ITALIAN - Every Tuesday from 9:30 – 10:30 am.  Meet some other moms, learn some Survival Italian in an informal setting.  Bring the Baby!

MAKER CREATOR SPACE – Every Thursday from 10-12.  Use our sewing machines, knit or sew in company.  Bake a cake!  It’s all good.  Just clean up when you’re done.

In addition to our regular library, we also feature an Education Advising Section, Children’s Corner Library and Women’s Space.

Later, Jack presents his findings on global warming at a United Nations conference, but fails to convince diplomats or Vice President of the United States... Catastrophic
climatic effects result in a series of extreme weather events that usher in global cooling and leads to a new ice age. The film depicts events predicted by scientists, but happening much more rapidly and severely than is considered scientifically plausible.

Middle School and High School English Classes at Associazione Italo Americana FVG

What are your Middle School and High School Kids doing this school year?  

They're coming to the Associazione Italo Americana FVG for English Classes!

2 hours a week.  The Fall Session begins the week of September 21st.  Here is the LINK for MORE INFO.  

Middle School - Tuesday or Thursday afternoons
High School - Wednesday or Thursday afternoons.
  
Don't worry, it's not school.  We focus on English fluency and Interactive Project Based Learning.  
Learn English while doing other things.    
Our teachers speak ONLY ENGLISH in the classroom.  
Your kids will love it... trust us!

Payments and Receipts

We can only accept cash payments and issue and distribute receipts during our Official Office Hours:  

Monday to Friday 4-7 pm, 
Tuesday and Thursday mornings 9-12 

On Saturday mornings it is not possible to accept cash payments or distribute receipts.
On Saturday we have courses, but our Administrative Volunteers are not in the Office.    

If you pay with an IBAN, and forward us the details, the receipt will be available for pick up at the Front Desk within a few working days, during our Office Hours.

Weekend Warrior - English Fluency Boot Camp

The next Weekend Warrior - Oct. 24-25

What is it?  A 10 hour Full Immersion English Fluency Boot Camp.  Learn to communicate in English.  During the weekend, we will be speaking and working ONLY English . . . and you will too!  A great way actually SPEAK English (we know that you already studied grammar and vocabulary, but never spoke much!).  Great for those who work long hours during the week, travelers, university students, people moving abroad.  Of course we have regular classes for Adults and for Kids that meet once a week.

Here are the hours for the next Weekend Warrior Session (tot. 10 hours) 
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 - 25 - 2 pm - 7 pm

Cost:  €125 (less 5% with IBAN Payment)

Weekend Warrior held 1 weekend each month.  Each time is different! You can sign up for as many weekends as you wish.  

Membership:  In order to take a class with our Association, you must be a member.  Membership:  €35 - Intero, €25 - Ridotto (teachers, students 16 and over, age 65 and over).  Membership is valid until Sept. 1, 2016.  You will fill in a Membership Form.

10 am - Adult Survival Italian Conversation
10 am - Maker and Creator Space - Do you sew or knit?  Want to learn want to help?  Want to sew or knit with company? Need to mend something?  Come on down!  We have 3 Singer Sewing Machines and lots of ideas. 
8 pm - Wine Cheese & Books - First meeting of the season - This group of Native Speakers and Near Native Speakers reads and discusses full length books.  Meeting once a month.  The venue changes each time.  Want to join them?  Send us an email at aia.fvg@gmail.com

Friday
5 pm - AC TC - American Corner Teen Club - Open to All Middle and High School Students.  Making, Creating, Playing, Hanging out in English.  Adult mentor supervision.  Lots of fun.  A group of last year's students will be going to the Model UN to be held in Rome in October, with scholarships from the U.S. Embassy Rome!  

Saturday
Associazione Italo Americana FVG COURSES BEGIN!  Saturday morning - Family English (Pre-K + parent) , Elementary English.  The other classes start on Monday, September 22nd.

Memberships must be renewed each year.  In order to take a course you must be a registered member.  For Children under age 16, 1 parent must become a member.  
With your membership you can attend the American Film Series at Cinema dei Fabbri starting Nov. 5th, Check out Books, Magazines and DVD's from the American Corner Library and Children's Corner Library, attend Members Only Events (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Cookie Fest, Independence Day, etc) register for our courses and much more.  

The cost of the membership is:
- €25 "Ridotto" for Students age 16 and over, Adults age 65 and over, Teachers / Professors
- €35 "Intero" for Adults.
