OCTOBER 
October in Trieste means Barcolana.  For AIA FVG / American Corner Trieste it also means the beginning of Fall Courses and Halloween!  Let’s get spooky!  We have a full schedule of activities and courses to keep you busy!  Don’t forget to renew your membership so that you can attend our film series, use our library and take advantage of member only activities. 

RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP!
Membership is valid for 1 school year.  Renew for 2013/14!  In addition to our American Cinema Series, we also have a fantastic library with over 5000 books, magazines and 1300 DVD’s that are available for check-out for members and member’s only activities. Membership is €25 for students, teachers and over age 65 and €35 for regular membership.  You must be 16 to become a member.  Bring a friend, your spouse, your colleagues… your mother, your teenager!  There is a form to be filled out.  Click here to download the membership form or pick it up directly in the office.  Memberships can be made in the Association or directly at the Cinema on American movie day before the show.  More questions? AMERICAN FILM SERIES 2013/14
Our 33rd Annual English Language American Film Series will be shown at the Cinema dei Fabbri, Via dei Fabbri 2/A in Trieste.  Showings will be on Thursdays at 2, 4, 6:30 and 9 pm.  The first film of the series is Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro) on November 14th.  (This substitutes the film “42” that was previously published in our program but is not available for distribution).  Here is the complete list of films for the 2013/14 season.

Welcome Fall Quarter Students!  Classes start the first week of October.  There are still openings.  You can join our classes at any time.  Do you want to try a course.  No problem, try a lesson at no charge and decide.  In addition to our regular English courses, we also offer Italian for foreigners at lunchtime and in the evenings. NEW ENGLISH COURSES for YOUNG NATIVE SPEAKERS

We have 3 new courses for Young English Native Speakers.  The Fall Semester (10 weeks) will begin the week of October 7th .  Call Karoline (349 8 66666 7) to register your child.
Elementary School - Advanced Reading:  Wednesdays 6-7:30 pm (€150)
Middle School – Advanced Reading and Conversation – Thursdays 5-7 pm (€ 200)
High School – Lit Flix – Tuesdays 4-6 pm (€200)

PRESENTATION of AIA FVG in-SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Oct. 7th at 6 pm – Presentation of the special courses that we offer for In-School English Programs for Public Schools. (Culture Lessons, Story Hours, Films the Classroom, American Literature Series and more).  Open to the Public.  Invite your English teachers,  principals, class representatives.

We are a 100% Volunteer Run organization.  Only our teachers are paid.  We manage the library, answer the phone, clean, take out the garbage, assemble furniture, paint, do the accounting, design flyers, organize programs, staff the cinema, organize Storytime, present documentaries, cleanup after TGIF, set-up for Coffee Break.  Sound interesting?  Come on down!  We would love to have you join us!

SCI-FI Contacts – From TEXT to SCREEN Film Series –Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m.  in our Multi-media Room - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Giulia Iannuzzi, a post-doc, has put together a great program of classic Sci-Fi films and TV Series, linking the original novels to the films.  Science Fiction to the max.  Before each film, a brief introduction and some literary background about the book that became the film. In our new multimedia room.  Piazza S. Antonio 6.  Bring a friend and a stay away from Martians!  Here are the films scheduled for October. 
Oct. 1 –The Twilight Zone (1959-60)
Oct. 3 – The Last Man on Earth (1964)
Oct. 8 – Star Trek (1966)
Oct. 10 – Stepford Wives (1975)
Oct. 15 – The Fury (1978)

FRIDAY AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in our Multi-Media Room at 6 p.m. – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 
October is American Government Month.  No presidential elections this year, but Americans will be voting for other offices and issues on November 5th.  Learn more about the other branches of the US government.  (By the way, if you are American citizen, remember to request your absentee ballot)

Oct. 11thUnderstanding Government - The Judicial Branch (50 min.) Federal Courts and the Supreme Court.
Oct. 18thJFK vs Obama:  Presidential Persuasion at its BestGuest speaker Sheila Khawaja, Interpreter / Translator,  will compare the speaking styles of these two charismatic presidents.

TGIF! (Thank God It’s Friday Aperitivo)– in our office from 7 – 9 pm – NOW MEMBERS ONLY 
October 18th  food from Curry Mix – specialities from Bangladesh and Asia.   This is now a MEMBERS ONLY event.  Children are welcome.  Enjoy an Ethic Aperitivo.  How does it work?

HALLOWEEN PARTY For Children – October 25th from 5-7 pm – OPEN to MEMBERS and their FAMILIES / FRIENDS
Pumpkin carving, Games, Trick or Treating, Haunted Room!  Attention Volunteers!  We need help decorate a few days beforehand and staff the Haunted Room as well as organize activities for the party!  Please call or email to reserve for your children or to volunteer aia.fvg@gmail.com or 040 63 03 01.  A €5 donation per family is requested to cover snacks and treats.
