American Government Month - Friday American Experience


October is American Government Month at Friday American Experience
Election day in the US is November 5th.  No Presidential campaign this year, but local political campaigns are in full swing.  2 documentaries and a speaker.

Understanding Government—The Legislative Branch (50 Min).  The Senate and the House of Representatives:  how laws are made, the influence of lobbyists and special interests, checks and balances between the 2 houses and the branches of Government.

 Oct. 11th—Understanding Government—The Judicial Branch (50 min.).  Federal Courts and the Supreme Court oversee the laws of the land in keeping with the US Constitution.

Oct. 18th—JFK vs Obama:  Presidential Persuasion at its Best -Sheila Khawaja, guest lecturer—Master in Translation and Interpretation,  will compare the speaking styles of these two charismatic presidents.
 
Oct. 25th - No Documentary due to Halloween Party for children.

8 Young Americans share one goal: to win the National Spelling Bee (Documentary, 107 min.)
The kids are in 8th grade (seconda media) and the suspense and the stakes are high: $30,000 plus national TV coverage.
Spelling Bees (gare dello spelling ad alta voce) are regularly held in schools around the country and the local winners head to this national competition.  (Leave the spelling to the kids.  No dictionary required!) OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Shae McNamara - Guest Speaker at Friday American Experience.


At American Corner Trieste, Education is our Theme for the month of September. Join us for Friday American Experience, every Friday at 6 pm. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Friday, September 20th at 6 pm our Guest Speaker is Shae McNamara, Life Coach and Professional American Athlete in Pro Basketball and Australian Rules Football.  He'll speak on “Creating Action in your Life by Following Your Dreams and Your Goals”.

Shae, an American from Milwaukee, played NCAA basketball in the US and in Pro Basketball in Germany. He accepted a position to in Australia to play Australian Rules Football. Shae was one of the first Americans to play this sport professionally. The most popular sport in Australia, it combines rugby, soccer and basketball. The ball is made of kangaroo skin and the field is oval. What a crazy game where you use other players as ladders to get to the ball!

He now shares his experiences with others to help them reach their potential and deal with change in a positive way.   When he was playing he had the nickname "Big Diamond" thanks to his height and his potential as an athlete. 

Today Shae is a Life Coach and shares his experience to inspire others to reach their full potential.  He has a degree in Psychology and Social Work from Marist College.  In January 2014, his book "The Diamond State of Mind" will be published.

Each film will be introduced by Giulia Iannuzzi, post-doc, who will give some literary background on the book that became the film.  What fun!  These films have original special effects (not digital designs).

€25 for "Ridotto":  Students (over age 16), Teachers, and 65 years and older

How do I become a member?
You can come by our office and fill in our membership form, or register directly at Cinema dei Fabbri on American Film Night.  We are located in Piazza S. Antonio, 6 - Trieste - tel: 040 63 03 01, aia.fvg@gmail.com.  Office Hours: Monday to Friday 4-7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9-noon.

How can I pay?
We accept Cash, Checks, IBAN (if you pay by IBAN please specify in the request your first and last name and that is for Iscrizione Socio 2013/14).  Bring a print of your IBAN Payment when you fill in your form to receive your membership card and your receipt.

How long is my membership valid?

TEN9EIGHT Shoot for the Moon

Friday American Experience is back!  September's theme is Education.

September 13th at 6 p.m.

TEN9EIGHT:  Shoot for the Moon  - documentary - 85 min. The stories of High School students from Harlem who compete in a Business Plan Program that changes their lives.  An American student drops out of high school every 9 seconds.  Imagine if they didn't. 

Thanks to this program, students learn that they are responsible for their futures.  Staying in school is smart business!  They learn to become entrepreneurs and take their destinies into their own hands.

AISNA - American Studies Conference in Trieste - Sept. 19-21

A Call for Volunteers at the AISNA Conference "Discourses of Emancipation and the Boundaries of Freedom" Trieste, Sept. 19-21 2013,

The university is enlisting volunteers. If you would like to help out at the conference, contact Leonardo Buonomo at buonomo@units.it

Extra hands are welcome especially during the first 2 days of the conference to help the attendees navigate through the check-in process. It's a great opportunity to meet scholars from various European countries and the US and practice your English.

As a conference volunteer, you can also earn university credits (type "F"):
1 credit if you assist the participants and attend plenary lectures and workshops for the entire conference,
2 credits if you also write a short essay on one of the topics discussed at the conference.

SEPTEMBER… Back to work and Back to School! 
Enough playing!  Time to get back to work and school.  Come back to the Associazione!  We have a full schedule of activities  and courses to keep you busy!  Don’t forget to renew your membership so that you can attend our film series, use our library and take advantage of member only activities. 

RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP!
Membership is valid for 1 school year.  Renew for 2013/14!  In addition to our American Cinema Series, we also have a fantastic library with over 5000 books, magazines and 1000 DVD’s that are available for check-out for members. Membership is €25 for students, teachers and over age 65 and €35 for regular membership.  You must be 16 to become a member.  Our Membership Goal for 2013/14 is 700, 1000 members would be even better!  Bring a friend, your spouse, your colleagues… your mother, your teenager!

NEW OFFICE HOURS
We are a volunteer run organization.  Officially these are our hours for the Library and for Information.  Courses and Programs may be held outside of office hours.  As always, if we’re here, we’re open! Ring the bell and come on up!  If you need information outside of hours you can always send an e-mail aia.fvg@gmail.com or call 349 8 66666 7.  Monday to Friday: 4-7:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday mornings 9-12.

It’s going to be fantastic again this year:  American Film Series, Made for Each Other, Friday American Experience, Thursday Coffee Breaks, Storytime, American Cooking School, TGIF, Life in Trieste “Welcome Home Stranger Series”, Morning Play Date and MUCH MUCH MORE!  We are thinking of new activities while you sleep… literally!

We are a 100% Volunteer Run organization.  Only our teachers are paid.  We manage the library, answer the phone, clean, take out the garbage, assemble furniture, do the accounting, design flyers, organize programs, staff the cinema, organize Storytime, present documentaries, cleanup after TGIF, set-up for Coffee Break.  Sound interesting?  Come on down!  We would love to have you join us!

Giulia Iannuzzi, a post-doc, has put together a great program of classic Sci-Fi films and TV Series, linking the original novels to the films.  Science Fiction to the max.  Before each film, a commentary about the media “contact” and more info about the making of  the films.  Open to the Public in our new multimedia room.  Piazza S. Three days of American Studies with scholars from all over the Italy and the US will be in Trieste for their Bi-Annual Conference.  The topic is Discourses of Emancipation and the Boundaries of Freedom.  Here is the link for more details.  You can attend any sessions that you want, but the coffee breaks and meals are reserved for registered attendees.  Of special local interest is:

1) 24 September - Invasion of the Body Snatchers, directed by Don Siegel, 1956, USA, 80 min.
Adaptation of Jack Finney's The Body Snatchers (novel 1955). Starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. Screenplay by Daniel Mainwaring.
Alien invaders in a small town in California replace human beings with duplicates that appear physically identical but are devoid of any real emotion.
 
2) 26 September - The Incredible Shrinking Man, directed by Jack Arnold, 1957, USA, 81 min.
Adaptation of Richard Matheson's The Shrinking Man (novel, 1956). Starring Grant Williams and Randy Stuart, screenplay by Richard Matheson.
During a vacation on a boat, Scott Carey gets in touch with a strange cloud and the next day he starts shrinking. When he discovers the strange phenomenon a few weeks later, there's nothing doctors can do.
 
3) 1 October - The Twilight Zone, TV series (first series: 1959-1964), created by Rod Serling, USA.
- Time Enough at Last, adaptation of the short story by Lyn Venable (If: Worlds of Science Fiction, January 1953), 25 min. Henry Bemis is an avid bookworm, but work and his wife keep him from having the time to read.
- What you need, based on the short story What you need by Lewis Padgett (pseudonym of Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore; Astounding Science Fiction, October 1945), 25 min. Peddott has the incredible ability to give people exactly what they need before they need it.
- People Are Alike All Over, based on Paul W. Fairman's Brothers Beyond the Void (Fantastic Adventures, March 1952), 25 min. Two astronauts are headed to Mars. One dies and the other receives an enthusiastic welcome by a civilization that seems very similar to the human's. The original pilot of Star Trek  (1965), has a similar plot.
 
4) 3 October - The Last Man on Earth, directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, 1964, USA-Italia.
Adaptation of Richard Matheson I Am Legend (novel, 1954). Starring Vincent Price, Franca Bettoia, Emma Danieli, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart; screenplay by Furio M. Monetti, Ubaldo Ragona, William Leicester, Richard Matheson (as Logan Swanson).
The first film version of Matheson's I Am Legend. In a post-apocalyptic setting, humans are infected by an unknown virus, that transforms them into vampires.  Filmed in a striking Rome,with the great Vincent Price.
5) 8 October - Star Trek, TV series (first series 1966–1969), created by Gene Roddenberry, USA.

- The Naked Time (50 min.): adapted as a short story by James Blish, in Star Trek (1967).  Orbiting planet Psi 2000, a strange affliction infects the starship Enterprise crew, destroying their inhibitions.

- Arena (50 min.): adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s short story Arena (1944) (teleplay by Gene L. Coon). Captain Kirk from the Federation starship Enterprise battles an alien captain who destroyed a Federation outpost.

6) 10 October - The Stepford Wives, directed by Bryan Forbes, 1975, USA, 115 min.  Adaptation of Ira Levin's The Stepford Wives (novel, 1972). Starring Katharine Ross, Paula Prentiss, Peter Masterson, Nanette Newman, Tina Louise; screenplay by William Goldman.

Joanna moves to the idyllic Connecticut suburb of Stepford, with beautiful housework obsessed housewives and an odd Men’s Club.  An example of sci-fi engaged in gender and political themes.

7) 15 October - The Fury, directed by Brian De Palma, 1978, USA, 118 min.  Adaptation of John Lee Farris' Fury (novel, 1976). Starring Kirk Douglas, John Cassavetes, Carrie Snodgress, Amy Irving, Charles Durning and Andrew Stevens; screenplay by John Lee Farris.

Both science fiction and thriller, The Fury is a gripping example of the classic psychic powers theme. The young protagonists are dragged into an obscure research project about the weapon potential of supernatural power.
