MAY 2013 NEWS


MAY
Yes, we are very happy in our new home!  Come over and visit, or better yet, use our Library, participate in a Coffee Hour, TGIF, Friday American Experience.  Thanks to all of our volunteers for their hard work.  It takes a village, and we certainly got one!  From volunteer carpenters, to electricians, library shelvers, cleaning crew.  Thank you, thank you.  There is still some work to do, but things are looking great.

 LIBRARY
We are now finished stocking the shelves and Open for business.  We need to label the shelves,  but you’ll love our new set up.  We now have a real reading room. 

COURSES
We are planning another INTENSIVE ENGLISH WEEK.  May 13-18.  This time in the daytime!  How about a 1 week, 10 hour course during your lunch break.  Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Conversation and even 1 week Intensive for Middle School and High School  (remember those final exams coming up).

For Middle School Students with Advanced English Proficiency in the Summer starting June 13th for 7 weeks we have – LIT FLIX – Advanced Multimedia and Reading Class.  This class will meet every Wednesday from 5-6 p.m. (Cost €70).  Keep up your reading skills and improve your English.

MADE FOR EACH OTHER at Cappella Underground – showtime 8 p.m. – MEMBERS ONLY
Made for Each Other closed with The Wizard of Oz.  Our favorite classic.  Thank you to Leonardo Buonomo and our volunteer team for making the series a success

AMERICAN FILM SERIES at Cinema Ariston – 2, 4, 6:30 and 9 p.m. – MEMBERS ONLY
The last movie of the 2012/13 season.  Sorry, no single admission tickets can be sold.

THURSDAY COFFEE BREAK in our library 10 – 12 – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
May 9th – Our monthly appointment to have a coffee and some good conversation (in English).  Help us shelve some books!

FRIDAY AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in our Aula Magna at 6 p.m. – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
We are back with our schedule.  May is Cultural Diversity Month.  We’ll look at Americans in Italy, multi-cultural weddings in the  United States, and the American Gay Rights Movement. 

May 10thGuest:  Gail Spilsbury, American writer, reads from her book “Sabina Quartet”.  Gail lives in Washington DC and works for National Geographic.  Some of you might remember her from the early 80’s when she was in Trieste with the US Foreign Service and taught English at AIA FVG. 

May 17th  -   Stonewall Uprising - In June 28, 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. That night the street erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations that lasted for the next three days, which marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.

May 24th -  Lidia Celebrates America: Weddings – Something Borrowed, Something New – Lidia Bastianich meets couples as they plan to tie the knot.  Wedding celebrations in America are as diverse as the nation itself.  A look at how different cultures celebrate their cross cultural weddings in the US.

TGIF! – in our office from 7 p.m. – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

May 17th - Happy Hour with drinks and snacks in our library.  Meet new people, speak English, enjoy ethnic cuisine.  After our Pizza Party with Il Barattolo, this month is mystery month.  We’ll create some suspense.  Don’t worry, it will be good!  Of course the company is fantastic!  (€5 contribution, BYOB).  Participants bring drinks to share.  Make a reservation so we know how much food to order at aia.fvg@gmail.com or by phone 040 63 03 01. 

STORYTIME at Biblioteca Civica Quarantotti Gambini – Via Lodole 7/A – Trieste (San Giacomo) –

Monday, May 6th, at 5 p.m. our American Corner Storytime team will read “The Foot Book” by Dr. Seuss.  You can bet that there will be a Hokie Pokie Dance and another activity.  Within the “Un Mondo di Storie – il giro del globo con fiabe e racconti” Project, organized by the Trieste Public Library, every week a different nationality reads a story every other week From now until December.

STORYTIME Light will begin on June 13th – Every Wednesday evening from 6-7 p.m. -
Mark your calendars.  Summer Reading fun again this year!  Put a library visit in your schedule every week.
