Women's History Month - Friday Documentaries in March



March is dedicated to Women's History Month. In addition to our Friday Documentaries, we will also have a special guest speaker on March 16th - Karen Hartman, from the US Embassy Rome will speak about women's rights.

MARCH Here is our 31-day plan for a month that comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.

PLEASE NOTE: Starting this month, the Association will remain closed on Ariston Movie Nights from 4-8pm, we will be open in the morning from 10-12. This will free our volunteers up for seeing the movie and helping at the cinema. Thank you!

GUEST LECTURER – Dr. Eugene Richardson Jr., CIVIL RIGHTS and the ROLE of the TUSKEGEE AIRMEN –

Dr. Eugene Richardson, Jr. , a veteran Tuskegee Airman born in 1925, will speak on his experience as an Afro-American pilot in the Tuskegee Air Corps during World War II and the changes that later came about thanks to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It is a great honor to have Dr. Richardson with us. What a fitting conclusion to Black History Month. Don’t miss this opportunity!

AMERICAN COOKING SCHOOL
A foodie tour of the US without leaving Trieste. This initiative has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of the US Embassy Rome and US Consulate Milan. El Paso: Tex-Mex was such a success (see mouth watering photos) that we will try to offer New Orleans: Cajun twice. We need a minimum of 10 students per class. The class on March 15th is already full. You can still register for the extra class on March 14th which will be confirmed once we have enough participants. Andrea, ESL teacher and professional chef, teaches a hands-on cooking course of US regional specialties. For Members Only. Dinner (prepared by you on-site) and recipes included! The true story of Barbara Conrad Smith, a gifted mezzo soprano at the University of Texas in 1957. She found herself in the middle of a Civil Rights battle, when the University was forced by the Texas legislature to cancel her from the leading role because she was Afro-American. Ms. Conrad Smith went on to sing leading roles in major opera companies around the world including the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna Opera. 73 minutes.

American Cooking School: New Orleans: Cajun















American Cooking School is back with Lesson 2: New Orleans: Cajun

A gastronomic tour of the US without leaving Trieste.

The response to El Paso: Tex-Mex was so phenomenal that we will try to offer this course 2 evenings. Chef Andrea Tamburini will teach us to create the specialities of this unique city.

The course is held in ENGLISH and at the end of the lesson the participants will taste the special dishes that have been prepared.

The session scheduled for Thursday March 15th at 6 p.m. is already full.If we can get a minimum group of 10 people for a second session we will also offer it on Wednesday, March 14th, 6 p.m.

Cost: €45 per person, members only (not a member yet? no problem... you can still become one and enjoy all the other benefits of AIA FVG - cinema, library, programs, etc. Membership: €35 - adults, €25 - students, teachers, over 65).

Pass by the AIA FVG office to register and to pay prior to the course.

The American Corner Trieste is so honored to host Dr. Eugene Richardson Jr., Tuskegee Airman, to speak about his experience as an Afro-American pilot in the Tuskegee Air Corps during World War II and the changes that came about thanks to the Civil Rights Movement in the US. This is a very fitting conclusion to Black History Month. Don't miss this opportunity!

After his military service, Dr. Richardson, continued his education, got a Doctorate in Education thanks to the GI Bill and became a school principal in Phildelphia. Now retired, Dr. Richardson visits schools around the country speaking of his experience and the Civil Rights Movement.

President Obama just paid tribute to the service of the Tuskegee Airmen, who were his guests of honor at the White House last month for the screening of the new film "Red Wings" by George Lucas starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Last week Dr. Richardson was the keynote speaker for Black History Month at Vanderbilt University. American Cooking School - Tex-Mex



What a fun evening! Here is the class picture of the El Paso: Tex-Mex course.

Everybody had a great time, learned some new recipes, some professional secrets, practiced some English....plus the food was FANTASTIC! It was just spicy enough for us to battle a cold Bora filled evening!

Thanks to Andrea and all of our diligent students. Keep studying, the final exam is in your own kitchen with your friends and family!

FEBRUARY – An extra day of fun this Leap Year!
We get an extra day of fun this February and there is an activity for each age group! Join us for American Cooking School, Black History Month, Storytime, Coffee Break or the Cinema…of course, English classes continue too.

CARNIVAL VACATION
Our Office / Library will be closed on February 20th, 21st 22nd for Carnival. No library or office services on these dates. Elementary, Middle School and High School classes will not be held. Adults – please talk to your teacher.

BAKE SALE!
To Bake? or To Buy? That is the question. Thanks to all who participated either by baking or buying our yummy creations. We collected €180 in donations which go towards purchasing supplies for Storytime and special activities in the Association.
